Auto Transformers

Auto Transformers

Motor and inductive loads use auto transformers. The auto transformers are not recommended to be used with DC equipment, electronic controls or any computer applications. The input and the output voltages on auto transformers are tapped from a common winding and not the separate coils like in an isolating transformer.

The auto transformers will step-up or step-down either a single or three phase line voltage to a specified voltage. Auto transformers are commonly used with machines that are manufactured in Europe. They have a 480 volt input and the auto transformers will convert that power requirement to 400 volt input which is generally used in the United States. Auto transformers are generally constructed with a single copper wire coil that is common to the primary and secondary circuit. It is then wound around a silicone steel core. The winding on an auto transformer will have three electrical connection points and we call these taps. Connected to two of these taps are the voltage source and the load. The other tap that is at the end of the winding is the connection to both the source and the load. Each of these taps on auto transformers will then correspond to a different source or load voltage.

Some of the features of auto transformers would be that they are small and compact in size, the initial cost of them is very low, they have a low sound level and give off excellent voltage regulation. The auto transformers are extremely efficient and they are available in type 3R enclosures. You can also get an auto transformer that is available in 50 Hz which is used in foreign installations along with obtaining auto transformers that have custom voltage combinations.

Auto transformers are used when the line voltage needs to be matched to protect a certain piece of equipment. If an auto transformer is used in a closed delta connection, they will introduce into a circuit phase shift and this will cause a higher power use. Local building codes sometimes prohibit the use of auto transformers as they can sometimes transmit line disturbances. When auto transformers are used for interconnecting high voltage power systems, they are generally much larger in size. Auto transformers are also used sometimes for starting of motors on an intermittent basis. This is when the motor is connected to the common winding voltage for a short time and then is connected to the full line voltage.

Finding the right auto transformers can sometimes be a little difficult but Tower Electric Motor Company (TEMCo) can solve that problem. TEMCo has been in business since 1968 and they are a company that you can trust. They are a member of the Better Business Bureau and TEMCo has used the latest technology to manufacture the highest quality of industrial grade auto transformers and other electrical products. Because TEMCo uses the highest quality components on their auto transformers, they have a much longer lifespan. All of their electrical products are backed by a quality warranty. So contact TEMCo at 1-510-490-2187 and experience their specialized staff of engineers and a good quality product.
