Distribution Transformers
Distribution transformers are transformers that reduce the voltage of an electric utility power distribution line. We see distribution transformers all over the place on a day to day basis without even realizing it. The most common type of distribution transformers are seen on utility poles. When you see the metal boxes or cylinders on a utility pole, those are distribution transformers. Residential customers will see they reduce the voltage to 120/240 volts single phase and commercial customers will see a reduction to 480/277 or 208Y/120 volts. Distribution transformers range in sizes from 5KVA single phase to 2500 KVA. They can be purchased in single phase or three phase and some distribution transformers are pad mounted rather than pole mounted. The pad mounted distribution transformers are primarily used for commercial use in which the primary and secondary terminals are connected to underground cables. Distribution transformers will use either copper of aluminum conductors. They are wound around a magnetic core that transforms current from one voltage to another. They can either be dry-type or liquid with the dry-type being smaller and they don't generate as much heat. The liquid type of distribution transformers use an oil that surrounds the core and the conductors which electrically insulates the transformer along with cooling it. This type of distribution transformer is much larger than the dry-type. The liquid distribution transformers are usually owned by utility companies and they are used in outdoor applications. Some of the most common type of applications that use the distribution transformers are: ✓ Tool Machines Single phase distribution transformers will have the same amount of time that is below the zero magnetic influence line as it does above it, unlike three phase power distribution transformers. They have three wires that move across the magnetic field in a generator which are spaced evenly apart by about 12o degrees. This will allow 73 percent more power to transmit through the power line, which is a lot more efficient. A single mounted distribution transformer is equipped with a low voltage circuit breakers, an overload warning light and a surge arrestor. To prevent any failure that may occur, a partial range current limiting fuse is mounted on the primary bushing of the distribution transformer. The triple mounted distribution transformers are also equipped with surge arrestors with partial range limiting fuses. Each of the primary windings and the secondary circuit breaker with each of the secondary windings, are self protected with an internal weak link fuse. These type of distribution transformers will provide 120 volt three phase service to a customer. Each distribution transformer may have various specifications needed and you may have to come up with a custom distribution transformer. If this is the case, then call TEMCo and have their specialists work with you in the design and specifications. TEMCo has been in business for 40 years providing solutions to their customers worldwide with all their electrical needs. You will find the TEMCo electrical products have a very long operational lifespan and they back their products with a super warranty.
