Drive Isolation Transformers

Drive Isolation Transformers

Drive isolation transformers are used with AC and DC adjustable speed drives which are sometimes called motor drives. The motor drives have a tendency to create mechanical stresses and harmonic currents. When the drive isolation transformer is placed in front of the motor drive, it will reduce harmonic distortion, electrical noise and also diminish any line voltage notching. The drive isolation transformers will keep any harmful harmonics to flow back into any power lines which could damage equipment.

Some of the drive isolation transformer features include:

Heavy duty copper windings are used to withstand any mechanical stress of the drive operation.

They provide electrical isolation between the primary line and the drive wiring.

They have electrostatic shielding which is placed between the input and output windings which reduce any problems that can be caused by line voltage transients.

Internal anti vibration pads will reduce transmission of any noises and vibrations.

The terminals on the drive isolations transformers are clearly labeled to make wiring a little easier.

Excellent voltage regulations are ensured with interleaved windings and wound core technology.

Certain criteria must be met in order to qualify as a drive isolation transformer. The drive isolation transformers must be listed to UL 1561 for non-sinusoidal current loads. They should have an inductive reactance level not less than 3 percent. The drive isolation transformers must also meet the IEEE 597 standard on the overloads. They should also be designed and manufactured to handle any thermal and mechanical stresses of the highly cyclic process control applications.

When drive isolation transformers are used in three phase applications, they will reduce the harmonic distortion by eliminating the triplen harmonics. This takes place when the transformer is connected delta-wye. The motor drive produces these harmonics and they are trapped in the delta primary. The drive isolation transformers have to be K-rated to be capable of handling any heat that is generated by these trapped harmonics.
