Transformer K-Factor
A transformer K-factor is a transformer that deals with harmonic generating loads. When a transformer uses a K-factor, they are what we call K-rated. A transformer K-factor is actually a value used on a transformer to determine the level of harmonic current that is being used without exceeding a maximum temperature rise. The transformer K-factor values can range from 1 to 50 with 50 being used for the highest harmonic environment that is possible. The transformer K-factor of 1 is only used on linear loads. The most typical transformer K-factor is a 13. Harmonics on a transformer, generate additional heat and will cause it to overheat, which could actually catch on fire and damage the transformer forever. When using a transformer K-factor, they are sized to handle the additional heat which in turn reduces the possibility of damage to the transformer. Each transformer K-factor is tested to UL 1561 rigid standards. Double sized neutral conductors are used on the transformer K-factor, which will change the geometry of their conductors or they will use multiple conductors for the coils on the transformer. A good quality transformer K-factor is designed with high grade silicon steel, more air ducts and they will use copper windings. The transformer K-factor is used with factory automation, in computer rooms and office buildings. Such applications as personal computers, video terminals, fax machines, UPS systems, copy machines, variable speed drives, and medical electronic monitors are just some of the examples where the transformer K-factor is used. There is usually a high harmonic content in these applications, so the transformer K-factor will take care of the level of harmonics in these situations. The transformer K-factor is used wherever non-linear loads are used and they only will demand current during part of a cycle. Some of the features that a transformer K-factor offer is they are designed with copper windings with multiple conductors which reduce the harmonic high frequency and they will increase the efficiency of the transformer. The transformer K-factor offers oversized neutral conductors that will eliminate any overheating, low flux density wound cores that will reduce any saturation along with double grounded electrostatic shielding that minimizes any electrical noise. A good quality transformer K-factor can be found at a company by the name of TEMCo that has been in business since 1968. They carry a full line of K-rated transformers from standard to custom transformers. TEMCo manufacture their transformers, using the highest quality materials. Their specialized staff is on hand to answer any an all questions that you may have and can help you with any specifications that you may have for a custom transformer.
